PROCESS

The process begins with a conversation about your particular needs.

Following this, a site visit (via remote, or in person). During this visit, the conditions and considerations of the work are noted. Pictures and measurements are taken. The extent of the work is determined, including the area in need of finishing, the complexity of the project, and which materials and processes are required to get the desired result.

Next, previsualizations and sample boards will be produced as required to preview the effect, so you will have a strong idea of the final outcome. For simpler projects, such as faux painting without additional elements, pre-made sample boards are used.

Once approved, the project is scheduled with a precise start date and approximate end date, as there are usually a few surprises along the way that make it difficult to know exactly how long the work will take. End estimates are typically accurate to within a day or two.

Materials are gathered, equipment brought in, and the site is prepared for the work. Ben has restored several properties of his own, and knows well how projects can spread out and make a mess; for this reason, he meticulously masks off the work area and keeps the process as compact and tidy as possible. A minimum of disruption is the goal.

The work begins. It can be done in complete isolation, or you can watch the process unfold. Ben is always happy to answer questions and demonstrate techniques as they occur. Because materials need to dry, cure, and set at various intervals, the work is not continuous. Some days require a couple of hours. Others can run very long. In all cases, your schedule will take priority (with advance notice). When you want the site vacated for the day, it shall be done.

Once the major work is complete, tools and materials are loaded out, the site is cleaned, and final touches begin. In this phase, the finishes are blended to ensure a perfect match with the surrounding environment. Adjustments are made—often invisible to the casual observer, but critical for the final effect.

All that remains is client approval.

After the result has been signed off, you will receive a sheet of maintenance instructions (typically minimal).

For residential projects, there is a 12 month guarantee which covers workmanship-related blemishes, cracking, or shrinkage, all of which will be retouched at no cost. In high-traffic applications such as retail or restaurant environments, an extended-term program of scheduled maintenance can be arranged at reasonable rates.

With normal use and care, decorative finishes can be expected to last as long as any other type of finish, often for many decades.

Some clients use these improvements to make their spaces pleasing until they can afford a major remodel. Most keep the finishes forever. Some are proud to tell their friends “none of that is what it appears to be”, while others prefer the illusion remains a secret. In any case, decorative finishes greatly enhance quality of life, resale value, and pride of place.
